Season 2 of Altered Carbon Review
8 episodes (50ish mins in length) Netflix This season falls short of the first one and i daresay the books. Where season 1 was a detective story set in a cyberpunk future, this season is a political thriller with a couple of romance plots. To be honest, it was weak in parts and stronger in others. Antony Mackie does alright but the real stars of the show are the AI’s and the bad guys. They are bogged down by a pointless addon and so much “what is the meaning of life” and “why dont you love me” shit that the cool notions of the book and seasons one gets lost. Has some decent scifi themes and the action in parts is good but anybody who is a fan of the genre will see the end result long before the end. A real let down after a great season 1 and a fantastic book series. Final review : 6/10, only worth watching if your are bored, like cyberpunk or scifi or dig the series (book or show).
Beforeigners (HBO 6eps, ~60mins). A Norwegian series made by HBO, this mini series (6eps) is an interesting series. The conceit is that about 10 years ago, people from the past (Mesolithic, Norse, and 19th Century Bohemian doucebags) arrive from the past. The present is soon overwhelmed by the visitors and the problems they bring. The story is framed as a murder mystery investigated by a drug abusing cop from modern times and a new police officer who is the first Viking Sheildmaden allowed on the force. The show moves along quite well. It is HBO, and b/c of that you get your nudity and violence. Including some rather funny male nudity. The show is pretty straight laced, though there are some great funny moments contrasted between modern and ancient sensibilities. I think it probably has more punch in Norwegian but the show is pretty good. The acting isnt bad, writing is quite good and the ending has a punch. Has some meta things to say about the past and immigration but they are somewhat incidental. Its not a perfect show, and if you used to British or US detective or cop shows you will almost get a quaint feeling from the police story. Also it pulls almost a 180 a couple times in the story and i am not quite sure what kind of story they want to tell (i will leave off specifics b/c spoilers). Overall the short nature, and the interesting premise is worth it. 7/10
Narcos Mexico Season 2 (Netflix, 10ep). Once Again outstanding work by the people at Netflix. Like all Narcos seasons it is a slow burn but the message, history, and violence keeps it going. The payoff is as good as you expect. Outstanding acting and writing by the mostly Latin American cast. Strong set up for S3. Kept from being perfection by the lack of resolution (but then again, when will the War on Drugs ever have a resolution). I dig the almost entirely Latin soundtrack and directions. Keeps it fresh from just an American show. 9/10
